In brief: Mexico’s trade deficit widens as fuel imports soar

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures which show that the country had a trade deficit of US$3.96bn in June 2022, compared to a surplus of US$710m in the same month of 2021. Exports in June totalled US$51.23bn, a year-on-year increase of 20.2%. Meanwhile imports totalled US$55.19bn, up 31.7% year-on-year. This was driven by a 96.2% increase in fuel imports, compared to a 56.8% year-on-year increase in fuel exports. According to Inegi, Mexico registered a trade deficit of US$12.94bn in the first six months of 2022.
