Cost-saving measures spark controversy in Costa Rica

Upon taking office in May, President Rodrigo Chaves announced plans to tackle the spiralling cost of living, with inflation running at an annual rate of 10.06% in June 2022 – the highest annual rate in a decade. In line with this pledge, Chaves announced that the government will cut import tariffs on rice to reduce costs for consumers. However, this has sparked major upset from local producers, while local media have questioned his motives.
