* Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel Lόpez Obrador has announced that his government plans to dramatically increase fertiliser production. Speaking after his visits to the states of Baja California Sur, Michoacán and Veracruz, Lόpez Obrador confirmed that his government will seek to increase the production of fertilisers by around 2,500 tonnes a day which he said will be used for some 25,000-30,000 hectares (ha) of land daily, mainly for corn and bean crops. He said that this would benefit some 2m small-scale farmers. Farmers in Guerrero state have already received fertiliser subsidies from the government and increased distribution has begun in the states of Chiapas, Zacatecas, Oaxaca, Nayarit, Morelos and Estado de México (Edomex). To date, the government has already spent US$500m on the project. Lόpez Obrador also revealed that his government is planning to construct a new ammonia plant in the city of Poza Rica, Veracruz, in a further attempt to improve Mexico’s self-sufficiency and to limit rising inflation.
