In brief: Mexican agricultural lobby optimistic on food security

*Mexico’s agriculture and livestock confederation (CNA) has said that food security is guaranteed in Mexico despite the impact of the conflict in Ukraine thanks to the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s anti-inflation plan. CNA president, Juan Cortina, was speaking following a meeting between López Obrador and US President Joe Biden on 12 July, in which the presidents pledged to accelerate implementation of USMCA and Mexico agreed to purchase up to 20,000 tonnes (t) of milk powder from the US to assist families in rural and urban communities, as well as up to 1m t of fertiliser (ammonium sulphate) to distribute to subsistence farmers.
