*Mexico’s Economy Minister Tatiana Clouthier has met with US Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai and Canada’s minister of small business, export promotion and international trade, Mary Ng, in Vancouver, Canada to mark the second anniversary of entry into effect of the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) agreement on regional trade. In a statement, Mexico’s economy ministry (SE) said Clouthier had discussed USMCA labour commitments and Mexican energy policy in bilateral meetings with both Ng and Tai. Both issues have proved contentious in recent months. The US has issued Mexico with multiple labour rights complaints under USMCA’s Rapid Response Labour Mechanism (RRLM) this year, while the attempts of Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to tighten state control over the energy sector continues to spark international concerns regarding the impact on the environment and foreign investment, with both Ng and Tai reiterating concerns over Mexico’s investment climate in relation to energy in particular. The office for the USTR also said Tai had raised concerns over “Mexico’s treatment of US investors impacting important manufacturing operations in the southeastern United States”.
