Cuba’s state electricity company Unión Eléctrica (UNE) has issued repeated warnings in recent days and weeks regarding electricity shortages amid ongoing reports of blackouts affecting large swathes of the island. The shortages are likely to be viewed with some concern by the Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC) government given that frustration over the blackouts was a driving factor in the unprecedented July 2021 anti-government protests. The shortages come amid other economic bad news for the government which was recently forced to admit again that the island’s crucial sugar sector was in crisis.
