Turning pink again

For many analysts Gabriel Boric is the perfect example of a generational change among Latin America's left-wing leaders. He took office as Chile's youngest president, at 36, in March 2022. His age meant he had not directly experienced the period of repressive military rule in 1973-1990 (he was only four years old when General Augusto Pinochet was forced to step down after losing a referendum). It meant he grew up and became a student activist in the post dictatorial era, when Chile was mainly governed by moderate, pro-market centre-left governments. On many issues Boric was in opposition to those administrations since he accused them of not doing enough to challenge ongoing poverty and inequality.
