Joe Biden spoke with Colombia’s President-elect
Gustavo Petro to congratulate him and Vice President-elect
Francia Márquez on their election in the 19 June presidential second round run-off. According to a statement from the White House, President Biden commended the Colombian people for holding free and fair elections and reaffirmed US support for Colombia. He underscored that he
“looks forward to working with Petro to continue strengthening bilateral cooperation, including on climate change, health security, and implementation of the 2016 Peace Accord”. The same source cites President Biden as welcoming “
the opportunity to discuss bilateral security and counternarcotics cooperation”. The two also discussed the importance of mutual respect and partnership as the foundation of the US-Colombia relationship, and agreed to have their teams follow up and engage directly on shared interests.
