José Manuel del Río Virgen, technical secretary of the senate’s political coordination board (Jucopo) and a member of the left-wing opposition Movimiento Ciudadano (MC), returned to work on 20 June after almost six months in preventive detention. He received a warm welcome in the senate. Del Río had been arrested in December for alleged involvement in the murder of fellow MC politician René Tovar, and he had remained in prison until his release last week. Del Río’s arrest had been the subject of much controversy, with his supporters claiming he is being politically persecuted and Mexico’s national human rights commission (CNDH) investigating the arrest for suspected irregularities. The case has also revealed deep internal divisions within the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party, which show no signs of dissipating following Del Río’s release.End of preview - This article contains approximately 885 words.
