In brief: Peru installs Las Bambas working group

*Peru’s government has announced the installation of a temporary working group with representatives from the government and the six towns that led protests against the Las Bambas open-pit copper mine in Peru’s southern region of Apurímac: Fuerabamba, Huancuire, Pumamarca, Chila, Choaquere and Chuicuni. The working group is in line with a 30-day truce called on 9 June which stopped the protests that had paralysed the mine, which is owned by China’s MMG, and contributes 1% of Peru’s GDP. According to the government, those participating in the meeting included ministers for agriculture and environment, Andrés Alencastre and Modesto Montoya, respectively, community leaders including Edison Vargas (Fuerabamba), Romualdo Ochoa (Huancuire), David Huillca (Chuicuni), Walther Melón (Choaquere) among others and representatives of the Las Bambas mine including Ivo Zhao (general manager of operations) and Gonzalo García (finance manager) among others. Those present agreed to hold bilateral meetings on the first three days of each week in each community with the participation of representatives from the government and ombudsman’s office.
