In brief: International tourism up in Mexico

* Mexico’s tourism ministry (Sectur) has announced that 11.64m international tourists visited Mexico between January and April 2022, a 43.4% increase on the same period last year. The figure remains 20.8% below that reached in the same period of 2019, prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, when 14.7m tourists visited the country. Using figures generated by the national statistics institute (Inegi), Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco Marqués stated that revenue from international tourism in the first quarter of 2022 equalled US$8.67bn, 123.8% more than in the same period of 2021 and 3.7% more than in the first quarter of 2019. Torruco Marqués noted that the average expenditure of international tourists between January and April 2022 was US$744.9, up 56.1% on 2021, and also 30.8% greater than the US$569.3 recorded in the same period of 2019.
