MEXICO: Tensions high ahead of gubernatorial elections
Around 11.7m Mexicans will head to the polls on 5 June to elect new state governors in six of Mexico’s 32 states. All governorships in contention are held by parties in the Va por México opposition alliance, which comprises Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), and Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD). The elections therefore offer the ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) a chance to gain ground on its opponents and further cement its status as the pre-eminent force at state level. This possibility, and Morena’s bullish attitude towards the elections, has caused tension with the opposition parties, which showed no sign of abating as campaigns closed on 1 June.
