Uruguay’s President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou conducted his first trip to Europe since taking office in March 2020 just after the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic began. During his visit to London, Lacalle Pou presented Uruguay as a beacon of “confidence and hope” in Latin America for investors in troubled times. He also talked up the prospect of a free trade deal with post-Brexit Britain, any move towards which would antagonise Argentina and cause ructions within the Southern Common Market (Mercosur).
