In brief: Argentina to strengthen relations with Mexico

*Argentina’s foreign minister, Santiago Cafiero, and secretary for economic relations, Cecilia Todesca, have travelled to Mexico to hold meetings over two days with high-level officials and businesspeople. A statement from Argentina’s foreign ministry says the aim of the visit is to “broaden the bilateral relationship and strengthen the work agenda between Argentina and Mexico, with a focus on reciprocal trade and investments”. Cafiero will first meet with Mexico’s foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, in Mexico City (CDMX) to analyse possibilities of expanding and diversifying trade between both countries, as well as cooperating in the development of the lithium value chain, both in terms of industrialisation and in the generation of efficient and sustainable technologies. Cafiero will also meet with Mexico’s finance minister, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, and agriculture minister, Víctor Villalobos Arámbulo. Meanwhile, Todesca will chair a meeting of the committee on economic, commercial and investment affairs in order to advance talks on the Economic Complementation Agreement between Argentina and Mexico (ACE 6). The foreign ministry noted that the bilateral relationship between Argentina and Mexico “received a great boost” with the official visit of Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández to Mexico in February 2021.
