MEXICO: Trade stifled on US border amid migration dispute
Commercial traffic crossing from the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Coahuila and Chihuahua into the US state of Texas ground to a halt for a week in April. Texas governor Greg Abbott had imposed additional safety inspections on vehicles crossing the border, causing severe delays. prompting losses of millions of dollars and sparking protests from affected truck drivers. The inspections drew harsh criticism from the federal governments of Mexico and the US, as well as from Mexico’s private sector. However, this disruption was somewhat intentional, serving as a bargaining chip for Abbott to persuade governors of the affected Mexican states to agree to key demands.
