ENGLISH-SPEAKING CARIBBEAN: Colonial legacy comes in for criticism
Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali called for an apology from the United Kingdom for its historic role in the slave trade after a meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson in London on 27 April. Ali’s comments followed awkward recent trips to other Anglophone Caribbean countries by members of the British monarchy to mark Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee, and discussion of removing the Queen as head of state. This all comes at the same time, however, as Britain is contemplating going against the grain and enforcing direct rule in the British Virgin Islands (BVI).
