MEXICO: Gender violence in the spotlight
On average, ten women were murdered every day in Mexico last year. The government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador maintains that it is making progress in tackling gender violence. However, large turnouts at International Women’s Day protests in Mexico City (CDMX) on 8 March indicated that dissatisfaction with the government’s efforts to tackle gender violence and femicide remains widespread [WR-22-10]. Now, one case in particular has thrown the issue well and truly into the spotlight, drawing national and international attention to the dangers confronting Mexican women and heightening scrutiny of the way that authorities handle such cases.
