* The Receita Federal tax authority in Brazil’s economy ministry has released its preview of overall figures for last year’s tax revenue – for the federal government, states, and municipalities combined – which show that Brazil’s tax burden totalled 33.9% of GDP in 2021. This is up from 31.7% of GDP in 2020. According to the government, this increase can be explained by the lifting of coronavirus (Covid-19) related tax exemptions last year, on the one hand, and by the recovery of the economy and consumption, on the other.
