REGION: Caricom leaders worry about the effects of climate change and war
The leaders of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) met in Belize for a Heads of Government summit from 1-2 March. The meeting was dominated by concerns over climate change and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which the Caricom leaders roundly condemned. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St Vincent & the Grenadines, usually considered to be a friend of Russia, had preceded his appearance at the summit with a strongly worded open letter to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin condemning the invasion, which he said had driven a “horse-and-chariot…through the Charter of the United Nations” [see box]. But, for the Caribbean, the consequences of the war are more than just legalistic: the implications for the Caribbean economies, only just beginning to see light at the end of the coronavirus (Covid-19) tunnel, could be dire.
