Uruguay’s President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou won a narrow but decisive victory over the main opposition Frente Amplio (FA) coalition in a national referendum on 27 March. Voters opted to preserve his government’s gargantuan Ley de Urgente Consideración (LUC) intact rather than repeal nearly a third of its 476 articles. It is a testament to the performance of Lacalle Pou’s government that it has not lost support as he only took office with a razor-thin majority in March 2020. The victory could define Lacalle Pou’s presidency as he made no secret of the fact that the LUC was his flagship reform.
