President Alejandro Giammattei has appointed his private secretary, Janio Rosales, as the new economy minister to replace Antonio Malouf who resigned on 8 March. Malouf, who had been in the post since Giammattei took office in January 2020, gave no explanation for his decision, beyond citing “future projects” which would prevent him from “continuing in the role”. He steps down at a critical time for the country which, as elsewhere, is facing soaring living costs and fuel prices due to the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
