Exporting pineapples to Israel. On 21 February Costa Rica’s agriculture and livestock ministry (MAG) announced the inking of a bilateral agreement between MAG’s phytosanitary service (SFE) and the equivalent body in Israel which will permit Costa Rica to export fresh pineapples, one of the country’s leading agricultural exports, to Israel. According to a MAG press release, since 2017 the two countries had been exchanging information regarding the issue while in 2019 Israeli phytosanitary authorities visited various pineapple production sites in Costa Rica to verify conditions of production among other things. According to the MAG press release, the process of reaching the agreement was supported by Costa Rica’s national chamber of pineapple producers and exporters (Canapep), and Costa Rica’s official export promotion agency (Procomer). Procomer figures, cited by leading daily
La Nación, put Costa Rica’s pineapple exports at some US$1bn in 2021, up 12% on 2020.
