Haiti and the NGO global debate

On 12 January, 2010 Haiti was struck by a catastrophic earthquake that killed well over 100,000 people and affected the lives of at least 3m. In a country with already extreme levels of poverty and inequality, around 250,000 homes and 30,000 commercial buildings were destroyed. Many countries and NGOs sought to respond rapidly with humanitarian aid. However, resources were limited compared to rebuilding needs, and economic recovery was slow. As late as 2017, seven years after the quake, the UN was reported saying at least 2.5m people were still in need of humanitarian aid.
