HAITI: Wage demands spark fresh unrest
Fears that the 7 February date marking the end of the term of President Jovenel Moïse (2017-2021), whose July 2021 assassination plunged Haiti into further crisis, could produce further unrest [WR-22-06] have so far failed to materialise. However, in recent weeks Prime Minister Ariel Henry has faced protests over demands for an increase in the minimum wage to address rocketing inflation, indicative of the dire economic situation facing the population. He has offered concessions, but these have yet to satisfy protesters, while reports that the police (PNd’H) fired on protesters, resulting in the death of a journalist, have reignited familiar concerns regarding PNd’H violence.
