The US, Canada, and other members of the international community have all condemned the harsh sentencing which began last week of anti-government protesters in Cuba who took part in the unprecedented protests in July last year over economic and health grievances [WR-21-28]. As has been the case previously, this criticism continues to fall on deaf ears. President Miguel Díaz-Canel did respond to the complaints but only to recognise the work of the attorney general’s office (FGR), blaming instead “campaigns of perverse calumny and the US blockade” for the anti-government protests.
