In brief: Unemployment in Mexico falls in Q4 2021

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures from its national employment survey (Enoe) which show that the unemployment rate in the fourth quarter of 2021 stood at 3.7% of the economically active population – people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment – equating to 2.2m people. This was lower than the 4.5% of the economically active population who were unemployed in the same period of 2020. In quarter-on-quarter terms, unemployment has fallen by 0.2 percentage points. A total of 56.6m people were employed in Q4 2021, 3.5m more than in the same quarter of 2020. Inegi states that this increase was concentrated in the restaurant and accommodation services industry, with 758,000 more people employed in this sector, in professional, finance and corporate services, with 593,000 more employed, and in the manufacturing industry, with 586,000 more people employed year-on year.
