ECUADOR: Lasso’s policies under scrutiny after oil spill

Concern is growing over a burst pipeline in the Ecuadorean Amazon, which came just two weeks after a major oil spill off the coast of Peru [WR-22-04]. Whilst the private pipeline operator Oleoducto de Crudos Pesados (OCP) announced it had repaired the pipeline within a day of the 28 January spill, the clean-up will take significantly longer: Ecuador’s environment ministry warned on 31 January that 21,000m² of land had been affected, of which 16,910m² was located within protected areas.
