ARGENTINA: Fernández tries to regain initiative

President Alberto Fernández is making a concerted effort to move beyond the constant questions about the state of play in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This week he recalled congress for an extraordinary session extending the whole of February to debate some 18 legislative initiatives ranging from judicial reform to regulations for the legal cannabis industry. But try as he may, Fernández cannot escape the topic of the IMF and the spectre of default looming over Argentina once again. The main reaction to the 18 initiatives sent to congress was over the absence of an IMF-related bill, prompting speculation that this was a negotiating tactic by the Fernández administration.
