* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures from its national employment survey (Enoe) which show that the unemployment rate in December stood at 3.5%, down from 3.9% in November, representing the lowest rate since the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The figure corresponds to 2.1m people being unemployed. In year-on-year terms, unemployment has fallen by 0.3 percentage points. The Enoe also shows that Mexico’s economically active population – people over the age of 15 who are employed or seeking employment – has grown by 4.3m compared with the same month in 2020 and totalled 59m people, equivalent to 59.5% of the overall population aged 15 and over. However, the same figures showed that the number of people employed in the informal sector totalled 32.2m, equivalent to 56.5% of the employed population and up 0.8 percentage points on the same month in 2020.
