BRAZIL: Disgruntled civil servants take to the streets
Brazil’s public sector workers, known for having comfortable working conditions, are unhappy. President Jair Bolsonaro backtracked on a promise made earlier last year to give a pay rise to all federal civil servants, instead guaranteeing a salary increase for federal police officers only. This has triggered discontent amongst other categories, with civil servants taking to the streets of Brasília on 18 January. Their mobilisation has not yet had strong repercussions, but the situation could threaten wider problems and force the government to reconsider.
