* Costa Rica’s tourism institute (ICT), a government body, has released new figures which show that tourist arrivals to the country totalled 1.35m in 2021 of which 94% were via air. This exceeds the government forecast of 1.3m tourists. According to the same figures, the US accounted for most of the tourists (852,182). Gustavo Alvarado said that the 2021 figures show “
we are advancing in a sustainable reactivation route of the sector, recovery jobs and the economy in atypical times.” According to the same figures, the total number of tourists who visited in 2021 represented 42.8% of the total registered in 2019, prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
