Chile’s President-elect Gabriel Boric began the process of assembling his cabinet this week by naming his chief of staff, who also doubles as the interior and public security minister. Matías Meza-Lopehandía, an academic and a lawyer specialising in human rights, and indigenous rights in particular, served as an adviser to Boric during the election campaign. He will now be Boric’s chief adviser, responsible for advancing his administration’s legislative agenda, managing the presidential agenda and the day-to-day running of government, and spearheading its strategy for resolving the longstanding Mapuche conflict.
