BRAZIL: Alarming destruction in the Cerrado
The latest figures on deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon, when they were finally released in November 2021, caused alarm and shock [WR-21-47]. Environmental destruction in the Cerrado biome is equally concerning but has grabbed far fewer headlines, partly because the Cerrado does not attract as much international attention, and partly because the deforestation figures were quietly published by the government on New Year’s Eve, a Friday.
