In brief: Chile’s unemployment at lowest point since start of pandemic
* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has announced that the country’s unemployment rate fell to 8.4% over the period of July-September 2021 – the lowest level since March 2020 when the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic struck. The Q3 figure represents a decrease of 3.9 percentage points compared with the same period last year, and a decrease of 0.1 percentage points compared with the immediately preceding rolling quarter (June-August 2021). Economy minister Lucas Palacios tweeted that this showed that the “worst of the pandemic was behind us” and noted that in the July-September period over 86,000 new jobs were created, led by the construction; trade; and hospitality & food sectors.
