In brief: Peru’s GDP figures show uneven recovery from pandemic

* Peru’s central bank (BCRP) has announced that the country’s GDP grew by 11.8% in August compared with the same month last year. Most of that increase can be attributed to the low basis of comparison during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, although GDP was also 1.6% higher than the pre-pandemic figure recorded in August 2019. Contrasting the August 2021 figure with that from 2019, the BCRP noted an uneven recovery, with primary sector GDP remaining 6.3% below pre-pandemic levels, but the non-primary sector registering an increase of 3.8%, driven by growth in manufacturing, construction, and services.
