COSTA RICA: Race wide open ahead of February

Antonio Sobrado, the president of Costa Rica’s supreme electoral court (TSE), has officially called the 7 February 2022 general elections. The previous 2017/2018 electoral cycle produced some major upsets – not least the shock first-round victory of evangelical pastor Fabricio Alvarado, who Carlos Alvarado of the centre-left Partido Acción Ciudadana (PAC) went on to defeat in the April 2018 second round run-off.
