In brief: Brazil’s inflation reaches double digits
* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for the consumer price index (IPCA), which show that monthly inflation reached 1.16% in September – the highest figure recorded for that month since 1994. This brings inflation in the 12 months to September to 10.25%, up from 9.68% annual inflation in August, and the first time since 2016 that Brazil’s inflation rate has tipped into the double digits. September inflation was driven by price increases in eight of the nine categories surveyed, particularly the housing, transport, and food & drink categories, which saw monthly inflation of 2.56%, 1.82%, and 1.02%, respectively. Inflation in the housing category was pushed up by a 6.47% increase in electricity prices.
