* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released new forecasts for the 2021 harvest of grains, cereals, legumes and oilseeds: these have been revised down by 0.3% compared with the previous estimates released a month earlier. The Ibge now expects this year’s harvest of these crops to total 250.9m tonnes (t), a 1.3% decrease on the record harvest of 254.1m t recorded in 2020. The 2021 harvest was initially expected to top last year’s record, but expected yields have fallen amid adverse climatic conditions, notably an ongoing drought and unusual frosts during the Southern Hemisphere winter, which have affected maize crops in particular. Sugar cane is another crop which has been negatively affected by the drought, but soya production continues to rise; the soya harvest is expected to yield 134m t this year, up 10.3% on last year.
