GUYANA-SURINAME: Seeking closer alignment

The discovery of large reserves of oil and gas off the coasts of Guyana and Suriname is proving to be a catalyst for greater international cooperation in north-east South America, not just between Guyana and Suriname but also potentially embracing Brazil and French Guiana. By contrast, the main Venezuelan opposition coalition has confirmed that the one thing on which it agrees with the Venezuelan administration led by Nicolás Maduro is the claim to Guyana’s Essequibo region and associated offshore waters.
