Proactively defending intellectual property rights

For years the violation of intellectual property rights in Mexico has been a major concern for foreign countries and firms affected by Mexico’s large counterfeit market. But the tables are now turning, and Mexican authorities are becoming more aggressive in defending the country’s intellectual property, particularly when it comes to the cultural heritage of its indigenous peoples. Nowhere is this more evident than in the area of textiles, where Mexico has sought to protect the traditional designs developed by its people that have been unscrupulously copied by foreign clothing firms that have made significant amounts of money from them without ever acknowledging where the designs come from, much less offering to pay compensation to the rightful owners.
