* The Colombian petrochemical manufacturer Esenttia, a subsidiary of the state-owned oil company Ecopetrol which produces raw materials for the plastics industry, has announced the construction of a plastics recycling plant in Tocancipá municipality (Cundinamarca department). Esenttia has said it expects the project to enable the production of 12,000 tonnes of plastic resin per year using recycled plastic, which will then be used to manufacture products such as bottles and packaging that in Colombia are currently only made using virgin plastic. The president of Esenttia,
Juan Diego Mejía Mejía, said that the recycling plant is expected to generate 3,000 jobs, and will play a key role in reducing the quantity of plastic that enters Colombia’s waterways and landfills. The plant is scheduled to open in 2022.
