* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest figures for the retail sector, which show that the volume of sales grew 1.2% in July compared with June. This is the fourth consecutive month that sales in Brazil’s retail sector have grown, and brings the volume of sales to record levels since the current series began in 2000. In year-on-year terms, retail trade grew 5.7% compared with July 2020.
Cristiano Santos, the Ibge’s research manager, notes that this positive result conceals a heterogeneous performance within different retail categories, citing for example office equipment and supplies, a category which is yet to recover the losses incurred during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, with sales remaining 26.7% below pre-pandemic levels.
