BOLIVIA: Government vows to crack down on rising coca production

A report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), published on 31 August, found that coca cultivation in Bolivia reached its highest level in a decade in 2020. Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo subsequently vowed to crack down on illicit coca cultivation but reaffirmed the left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government’s refusal to criminalise the coca leaf. President Luis Arce’s administration has blamed last year’s increase on his predecessor, interim president Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020), given that Arce did not take office until November 2020.
