* The Central American development bank (BCIE) has made the second disbursement of US$5.8m of a loan signed with Honduras to support the implementation of its national vaccination plan against the coronavirus (Covid-19), with which the purchase of 4.4m doses is foreseen for the immunisation of 2.2m Hondurans. Announcing the disbursement, BCIE executive president
Dante Mossi said the bank was pleased with progress made by the health ministry in the purchase of vaccines and the implementation of the plan since “
with this financing we are contributing to the immunisation of more than 30% of Hondurans prioritised by the authorities”. In May the BCIE and Honduras formalised financing of US$35m from BCIE’s Covid-19 emergency support and preparedness and economic reactivation programme, which BCIE made available to its member countries for up to US$800m “
on very favourable terms”, according to the bank. Honduras was the second country to make the request, and in June the first disbursement of US$7m was made, resulting in the purchase of 238,000 doses for the benefit of more than 106,000 Hondurans. Just 11.3% of Honduras’s population has been vaccinated, above only Guatemala and Nicaragua in Central America.
