HAITI: New government takes office; familiar concerns persist
Ariel Henry has taken over as Haiti’s latest prime minister after interim prime minister Claude Joseph announced he was stepping aside. This would seem to mark the end of a power struggle, also involving Senator Joseph Lambert, which emerged in the wake of the 7 July assassination of President Jovenel Moïse [WR-21-28]. The shift followed the international community’s withdrawal of backing for Joseph in favour of Henry whose assumption of office has drawn familiar complaints of foreign interference from the local opposition and civil-society groups. This augurs badly for Henry who faces some gargantuan challenges ahead. Added to the existing priorities inherited from the previous government - staging general elections as a way out of the political and constitutional crisis and tackling the parlous security situation [WR-21-27] - Henry is under huge pressure to bring those behind Moïse’s murder to justice.
