Four days later, Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary-General Luis Almagro called an urgent meeting of OAS members to consider suspending Nicaragua from the hemispheric body – a threat he already floated last year. The outcry was prompted by a string of arrests, including of five presidential pre-candidates, ahead of the 7 November general elections in which President Ortega is seeking a further term.
