CHILE: Constitutional convention installed despite discord
The constitutional convention that will draft Chile’s new constitution has been formally convened. However, the inauguration ceremony was not devoid of controversy with some convention delegates deciding to stand in solidarity with those demanding justice for the victims of the police repression of the social protests that erupted in the country in 2019. This action of political protest not only delayed the formal installation of the convention but also raised questions about its ability to stick to its task and agree a new constitutional text.
