In brief: Chile to close four coal-powered energy plants

* Chile's President Sebastián Piñera has announced the early closure of four coal-fired power plants in 2025. This announcement is part of the Chilean government’s commitment to fight climate change and become carbon neutral by 2050. The four power plants are Angamos 1 and 2 in Mejillones commune, Antofagasta Region, and Nueva Ventanas and Campiche in Puchuncaví commune, Valparaíso Region. Piñera said that the closures would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 6m tonnes a year, equivalent to taking over 2.4m private vehicles off the country’s roads, and that with these closures only 10 out of 28 coal-powered plants would operate in Chile between 2026 and 2040. According to the government, coal-powered plants had a maximum production capacity of 5,526MW in 2018. However, with the new closures, only 1,965MW will be produced by coal-power plants.
