Sales of beef surge, underpin rising exports. Paraguay’s national service for livestock health and quality (Senacsa) released new figures on 1 June which show that beef exports surged in the first five months of 2021. Between 1 January and 31 May this year, Paraguay exported 142,757 tonnes (t) of beef, a 46% increase on the amount exported over the same period in 2020, to the total value of US$638.7m, a 56% increase on a year earlier. Chile was the main export market in January-May, accounting for 43% of total exports by value. It was followed by Russia (21%), Taiwan (10%), Brazil (8%), and Israel (7%). Senacsa’s figures were confirmed by trade data released by Paraguay’s central bank (BCP) on 9 June, according to which the country’s exports grew 23.5% in January-May this year compared with 2020, to a total of US$5.5bn. Paraguay registered a US$935m trade surplus over this period. Beef was one of the most dynamic exports in the month of May, accounting for 14.5% of total exports (second only to soya grains, which accounted for 34.6%), and surging 93.6% compared with May 2020.
