Sebastián Piñera has promulgated a law expanding until September the universal emergency family income (IFE) scheme set up to help vulnerable families in the context of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Set up over a year ago in response to the pandemic, the scheme, which currently benefits some 13m people, will now benefit 15m. Each one-person household will receive Cl$177,000 (US$246) per month for June, July, and August, rising to Cl$400,000 and Cl$500,000 for a three and four-person household respectively. “no family will fall below the poverty line”, the government said that the amount will be reduced by 50% in September although benefits could be extended in the following months, depending on the public health situation.
